the catechumen and the baptizer and some others who may join. The former is required to fast one or two days. There is no such prescription in the New Testament. In the case of Christ fasting followed his Baptism (Matt. 4:2.); and the three thousand pentecostal converts seem to have been baptized on the day of their conversion (Acts, 2:38–40). Fasting is likewise mentioned as customary in connection with Baptism by Justin Martyr and Tertullian, but not so definitely as in the Didache. The fasting
